Meet the Staff Team

Meet the team behind Kidney Wales. Since March 2020 we have been working from home, and doing our bit to operate safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This means we are not meeting you in person, talking at your schools, visiting dialysis units or doing our wellbeing presentations. We are all looking forward to seeing you again soon. In the meantime lets ‘virtually’ introduce you to the Kidney Wales team.

Meet Brett

Hi, I’m Brett Dowds. I am the Patient Information and Support Manager here at Kidney Wales.

I have been part of the Kidney Wales team since 2017, I was initially involved with the charity as a volunteer. In 2018 I secured a part-time role as the North Wales Patient Advocate and by 2019 I became a full-time member of the team. In 2020 I became Kidney Wales’ first Patient Information and Support Manager.

Outside of work I love spending good old quality time with my favourite people. This often involves dinner, cocktails, hiking, dancing, concerts, shows, and having a good old laugh. I also enjoy a bit of cooking and baking.

I have a special connection to Kidney Wales; I have been a kidney patient for almost 28 years and since 2010 I have been a home dialysis patient in Wales. I moved back home to live with my mother for treatment, but as of 2021 I am on the hunt for my very own house, and I cannot wait! Although, changing renal unit is a tad bit daunting.

Working for Kidney Wales has been so rewarding, I have so many fond memories. One of the biggest highlights is always a Newgale visit. We started with a group of young adults who barely knew each other. We got them involved in activities that pushed them out of their comfort zones, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) does not need to stop you. Another highlight was at the 2019 British Transplant Games in Newport, we had an All-Wales team and the sense of community and acceptance there was incredible.

I love hearing from you, I have had CKD most of my life, have tried all the treatment options and had many things go wrong. If you would like to contact me, please do so. I never judge, I support, and listen to whoever I may be speaking to and I will do my best to get you the most up to date and relevant information.
