Following recent lobbying by Kidney Wales and other kidney disease charities across the UK, the UK Government’s Chief Medical Officer announced on 27 April that renal dialysis patients should be advised to shield against COVID-19. Until this point there had been very mixed messages about what measures dialysis patients should take to protect themselves, depending on which part of the UK they live. This new position makes it clear that all dialysis patients across the UK are advised to shield and that they are now eligible to access other support services such as priority for supermarket deliveries, food boxes etc. Letters are being sent from NHS Wales to the 1500 dialysis patients in Wales to confirm the measures that should be taken.
